Guterres urges Yemeni Parties to fully implement Truce terms
UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday evening urged the Yemeni parties to fully implement the terms of the truce, following a two-month extension.
Guterres, welcomed the agreement between the Yemeni government and the Houthis to renew the truce in Yemen for an additional two months under the previous conditions.
The UN truce enabled the Yemeni parties to meet under UN auspices to begin negotiations to reopen roads in Taiz and other governorates and implement military de-escalation mechanisms across Yemen, he said.
He stressed the importance of completing the implementation of the truce provisions in full without delay, in the interests of all Yemenis still suffering in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
“Yemenis have felt real and tangible benefits, including a significant drop in violence and civilian casualties, an increase in the flow of oil derivatives through the port of Hodeida and the resumption of international flights from Sanaa for the first time in six years”, he said.
Guterres thanked his Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, and his team for their great efforts, as well as all regional and international actors, including members of the Security Council, for their continued support for our collective efforts.
He warned that continued regional and international support would remain “a very important factor for the continued successful implementation of the truce”.
The Houthi militias have yet to implement any of the truce’s provisions, including lifting the siege of Taiz and delivering salaries, even though the Yemeni government, supported by the Arab coalition, has fulfilled all of its humanitarian provisions.
The renewal of the UN truce for another two months was widely welcomed by the international community, which called on the Yemeni parties to work with the international envoy to find a comprehensive and lasting political settlement.
The Houthi militia frequently puts mines on the path to peace, racing against time to capitalize on the duration of the truce by mobilizing elements, arranging their military ranks, and modernizing their arsenal in preparation for a new round of war, experts said.
