A joint quartet statement on the situation in Yemen
The four-party coalition countries affirmed their commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen and to stand by its people.
The British government said in a statement on Saturday that ministers and representatives of the governments of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US, hereinafter referred to as the “Quartet”, met on September 20th to discuss the situation in Yemen.
The four countries affirmed their commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen and to stand by the Yemeni people through efforts to end the conflict and the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The Quartet welcomed the concrete results achieved by the truce for the Yemeni people since it began on 2 April 2022, and also welcomed the continued implementation of agreed confidence-building measures, including facilitating the flow of fuel to Hodeida port and resuming flights to and from Sana’a airport.
The statement called for the implementation of pending measures, including opening the main roads around Taiz to the Houthis and agreeing on a joint mechanism to pay civil servants.
The Quartet condemned the Houthis’ massive military build-up and all attacks that threatened to derail the truce, including recent Houthi attacks on Taiz, and the Houthis’ recent military offer in Hodeida, which violates the Hodeida agreement.
The statement stressed support for the efforts of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to extend and expand the truce on October 2, 2022, in addition to the full implementation of all the truce conditions.
The Quartet agreed that a ceasefire and a permanent political settlement should be the ultimate goals of the Yemeni-led political process under the auspices of the United Nations, and that such a settlement should be based on agreed terms of reference and relevant Security Council resolutions.
The four countries affirmed their support for the Presidential Command Council, stressing the importance of the Legislative Council’s cohesion, and also welcoming the Legislative Council’s commitment to improving basic services and economic stability.
