COP 27 summit: Arab leaders talk about their responsibilities in addressing climate crisis


After the arrival of dozens of world leaders to the conference of the parties on the climate (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, the speakers unanimously agreed on the seriousness of the climate crisis that threatens the entire world, stressing the need to take action and practical steps to reduce the temperature of the planet.

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi opened the summit, stressing the importance of action to address the fateful climate crisis, which is considered the biggest challenge facing the world at all. He expressed his hope that efforts will be made to implement sensible steps in this regard, and stressed that the human suffering caused by climate change is repeated and the urgent need to end it.

Stop the War

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi said in his opening speech that people around the world are waiting for the quick, effective and fair implementation of emission reductions and global warming to reduce the number of climate disasters that hit various regions, causing huge casualties and losses. He said that the results of this conference contribute to the transformation of the lives of millions of people for the better, referring to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, calling for the necessity of stopping the war, saying, “Please stop this war,” while applause was raised in the sprawling hall, and he expressed his readiness to mediate in this field.

Battle of Survival

In the same context, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that climate chaos is the main cause of global conflicts, and warned that humanity is fighting a battle for survival in the face of climate change. He also called for an agreement between developed, developing and emerging economies for the environment and for the benefit of humanity, especially China and the United States, stressing the importance of abandoning coal as a major source of energy and avoiding its serious damage, and urged international institutions to change their economic approach and provide financial resources for carbon neutrality.

Emirati efforts

For his part, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed said that the dangers of climate change target everyone without exception, and pointed out that his country continues to cooperate with the international community to face this crisis. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed on Monday the continued focus in the UAE on reducing emissions in the oil and energy sector, adding that “the world is facing complex challenges, and addressing them requires joint action and international cooperation.” Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed heads the UAE delegation participating in the 27th session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) hosted by Egypt, clarifying that the future of future generations depends on the decisions, actions and steps we take today, and expressing his support for the call by Egyptian President, Abdul Fattah el-Sisi, to work on working to end the Ukrainian crisis to achieve international peace and security and to achieve the challenges of the international peace and stability, which affect the international peace and stability, which are to The UAE is committed to ensuring energy security while reducing emissions, he said, noting that oil and gas in the country are among the lowest carbon densities in the world. Saudi Initiatives

For his part, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of the second edition of the Green Middle East initiative on the sidelines of the COP27 climate summit. Sulaiman revealed that the Green Middle East initiative seeks to reduce carbon emissions, explaining that his country is seeking to produce 50% of electricity using electricity, and the Saudi Crown Prince indicated that 44 million tons of carbon emissions would be removed by 2035. He also said that his country aims to achieve zero neutrality in 2050, adding that “the Kingdom aims to find solutions to provide more sustainable energy systems,” adding that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hopes that the Climate Summit “COP27” will achieve conclusions that will establish a bright future. The Saudi Crown Prince also announced hosting the headquarters of the general secretariat of the Green Middle East initiative and providing $2 million to support it, stressing that “we aspire to intensify Green Middle East initiatives to face common challenges, taking into account the capabilities of member states.”

Positive effect

For his part, Chairman of the Yemeni Command Council Rashad al-Alimi said on Monday that the decisions you will take at the climate summit will have a positive impact on the lives of millions of Yemenis who have lost half of their national product estimated at $126 billion over the past eight years, not to mention the massive destruction, the overcrowded displacement camps and services that are less than half of their capacity. Al-Alimi, during his speech at the 27th Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheik, praised international and regional initiatives in particular in the climate context, in the context of the Green initiative, and in particular the Arab Gulf initiative, with the goal of supporting the goal of reaching standard emissions in Egypt How and how to survive in the water sector.

Sudan Engagement

In the same context, the Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan, praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts in seriously addressing climate change in the Middle East region. He added, in a speech during the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El-Sheik, on Monday evening, that the Green Middle East initiative offers practical solutions to absorb and address the negative effects of climate change, address land degradation, and preserve the forestry sector and natural grasslands. He stressed the Sudan’s involvement in the programs and projects of that initiative, in addition to providing Sudan with natural resources to implement the plans and projects of the initiative, which are of great benefit to the peoples of the region.
