Houthi abuses continue in Yemen’s health sector

The Houthi terrorist militia continues its ongoing series of crimes and terrorism in Yemen. The Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights has announced that 139 health workers have been killed or injured by Iran-backed militias in Marib Governorate, in the north-east of the country, since the start of the war.

Abuses in Marib

“Since 2015, there have been 2,668 violations against the health sector in the province, committed by Houthi militias, ranging from bombardment, killing, injury, arrest, occupation, looting, prevention, deprivation and threats”, the Human Rights Ministry office in Marib said in a new report.

“Fifty-three health workers were killed, among them a doctor, a nurse and a health assistant who worked at these facilities, and 86 others were wounded,” the report said.

“A total of 134 health facilities and facilities were hit by missiles, ballistic missiles and cruise aviation, some of which were targeted more than once, causing the total destruction of 16 health facilities and facilities, and 34 health facilities and facilities were partially destroyed,” he said.

The report documented 18 cases of occupation and control of health facilities and facilities, 12 cases of looting of health facilities and facilities, 17 cases of detention, 102 cases of travel bans, and 145 cases of threats by Houthi militias against health workers in Marib governorate.

He added that Houthi militias have banned five campaigns by international and international organizations, including two by the Red Cross, which led to the suspension of the supply of medicines to 125 medical facilities, and the denial of treatment to 1,785 patients for chronic diseases.

The report said that the practices of the Houthi terrorist militia have resulted in the denial of medical services to more than 600,000 citizens, after health facilities and facilities were disabled.

Urgent investigation

The report called for urgent investigations into serious violations against medical and health institutions and personnel, coordination with the international community and international and UN organizations to protect hospitals and health centers as they are protected under international humanitarian law, and pressure on Houthi militias to stop targeting medical and health facilities with rocket-propelled grenades and using them for military purposes.

The militias’ control over the performance of UN organizations based in Sanaa that work in the health field, and their prevention of pharmaceutical humanitarian interventions in Marib Governorate to deprive citizens and displaced people of access to medicine and health services were among the points monitored by the report, which also documented the prevention and stopping of five pharmaceutical campaigns for the governorate, including two campaigns by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the suspension of the supply of medicines for chronic diseases from 125 medical facilities that were supported by international organizations, which caused 1,785 patients to be deprived, and the Houthi militias prevented the arrival of vaccines and medical campaigns in Marib, which caused more than 600,000 people to be deprived of medical services.

The suffering of the people

This comes at a time when the suffering and insomnia of thousands of residents in areas under the control of the coup d’état are escalating, with complaints of the near total lack of medical services, the outbreak of many diseases and epidemics, the widespread spread of corrupt medicines, at least 19 children have died, and dozens have been seriously ill after taking expired doses of cancer treatment in Sana’a.

Iran Plots

“The UN Security Council must impose severe sanctions for their ongoing crimes targeting women, children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to violations by the Houthi militias,” said Wadah bin Attiya, a political analyst in the south. “The recent period has witnessed many crimes and violations against the Yemeni people in many areas, especially the south.”

Bin Attiyah added that the violations carried out by the Houthi militias in various sectors such as the health sector, freedom of religion and belief, violation of citizens’ right to education, and violation of water networks and factories affected citizens’ right to water, and the killings are basically the execution of the terrorist plans sought by Iran in order to expand in Yemen
