In response to European sanctions targeted on Monday, Iran on Tuesday imposed sanctions on individuals and entities in the European Union and the United Kingdom, including “a visa ban, the impossibility of entering the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the blocking of bank accounts, and the confiscation of property and assets in Iranian territory.”
Tehran “is imposing sanctions on the following individuals and institutions in the European Union and the British regime,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency, indicating that those targeted were 28 individuals and entities in the EU and eight Britons.
The statement accused the sanctioned individuals and entities of “supporting terrorism and terrorist groups, inciting and encouraging terrorist acts and violence against the Iranian people, interfering in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and promoting violence and riots in Iran.”
According to the ministry, sanctions include “visa bans, impossibility of entering Iranian territory, blocking bank accounts, and the confiscation of property and assets in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Iran.”
The Iranian sanctions include military entities and institutions, as well as ministers and parliamentarians from a number of European countries, and members of the European Parliament, including Isabelle Roum, the French Minister of State for Women’s Equality and Men, Frédéric Reiss, the Belgian MP, and Rodrigues Kysvetter and Renata Alt, German MPs.
The European Union on Monday announced new sanctions against Iran, including 32 individuals and two entities, for their involvement in “suppressing popular protests and human rights violations.”
The Official Journal of the European Union published a list of individuals subject to the new sanctions, including Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeili, Minister of Education Yousef Nouri, and two entities linked to Iran’s law enforcement agencies.
The European Union announced on January 23rd that EU countries approved a new package of sanctions against Iran over human rights violations.
On January 25th, Iran announced new sanctions against 25 individuals and entities from the European Union and nine from the United Kingdom, in response to sanctions imposed by the bloc two days earlier.
According to the statement, the EU renewed “its call on the Iranian authorities to end their crackdown on protesters and arbitrary arrests and to release all detainees”.
Over the past few months, since the death of young Iranian Mahsa Amini, the European Union has adopted sanctions against Iranian officials, personalities and institutions.
Iran has been witnessing mass protests since the death of young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini on September 16, after she was detained by the morality police for “improper wearing of the hijab.” Iranian police say that Amini suffered from a health problem that led to her death. The girl’s family confirmed that she was not suffering from health problems, and accused the police of torturing her.
