Khat Tax in Taiz Exposes Brotherhood Corruption… What’s New?

Three stormy meetings have failed to recover 950 million Yemeni rials from the khat tax contractor in Taiz, Abdo Ahmed Al-Jabari, due to the involvement of corrupt officials from the local administration loyal to the Al-Islah party (“the Brotherhood‘s arm in Yemen“) in obstructing the collection and supporting the contractor Al-Jabari.

Journalist Marzouk Yassin reported on his Facebook account that Taiz has seen a worsening of the khat tax crisis after the failure of three consecutive meetings to discuss ways to collect 950 million rials from contractor Al-Jabari, who has been refusing to pay for nearly two months. He has also been previously accused of embezzling funds by officials from the Brotherhood.

One of the meetings was chaired by the governor of the province, Nabil Shamsan, but no satisfactory solution was reached, according to Al-Montasaf Net.

According to the source, contractor Al-Jabari threatened to publish detailed records of the daily financial transfers he made to officials over the past two years, estimated at about 5 million rials per day.

Sources indicate that this threat led the governor to intervene to obstruct the tax procedures by referring the contractor to the Public Funds Prosecution, according to the same source.

This development follows direct instructions from the Minister of Finance on July 28 to refer the contractor to the Public Funds Prosecution, seize the guarantees, and take decisive actions to recover the embezzled funds.

This crisis is expected to worsen the financial situation of the province, especially given the difficult economic conditions the country is experiencing.

Several military units from the Taiz Axis affiliated with the Al-Islah party have seized khat tax revenues in the largest collection centers in the province, “Al-Hangar and Al-Samsara.”

According to an official complaint, the axis expelled the official collectors and replaced them with others operating by force, including the contractor Abdo Ahmed Al-Jabari, who reported being detained by the military police without legal justification, according to Al-Khulasat Net.
