Hassan Bdeir : Hezbollah Leader Targeted by Israeli Airstrike in Beirut

An Israeli airstrike shattered the silence of Monday-Tuesday night in the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. Who was the target?

A source close to Hezbollah told Agence France-Presse that the Israeli airstrike early Tuesday in Beirut’s southern suburb targeted the deputy head of Hezbollah’s Palestinian file and the brother of the party’s military media chief.

The same source indicated that the strike hit Bdeir while he was at home with his family in the southern suburbs.

Meanwhile, Avichay Adraee, the Israeli army spokesman, stated on the social media platform X: “Fighter jets attacked last night, under the direction of the security agency, targeting a Hezbollah terrorist in Beirut’s southern suburb who recently guided Hamas operatives and assisted them in planning an imminent terrorist attack against Israeli citizens.”

Casualties and Official Reactions

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health announced that at least three people were killed and seven others injured in the Israeli airstrike.

Hezbollah has not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack.

Lebanese Condemnation

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli airstrike on Tuesday, calling it a “serious warning about premeditated hostile intentions against Lebanon.”

He added, “Israel’s continued aggression requires us to increase our efforts to engage Lebanon’s allies worldwide and rally support for our full sovereignty over our land.”

Similarly, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that Tuesday morning’s Israeli airstrike was a “clear violation” of the ceasefire agreement reached last November between Israel and Hezbollah.

In a statement issued by his office, Salam denounced the “Israeli aggression” on Beirut’s southern suburb, asserting that it constituted “a blatant violation of the arrangements to end hostilities and a flagrant breach of UN Resolution 1701, which ended the devastating 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel.”

He noted that he was closely monitoring the repercussions of this strike with Defense Minister Michel Mansa and Interior Minister Ahmed Al-Hajjar.

Escalation of Tensions

This airstrike comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned last week that his military “will strike anywhere in Lebanon against any threat.”

This marks the second Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah’s stronghold in Beirut’s southern suburb since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect on November 27.

The first airstrike occurred last Friday, targeting a building that Israel claimed Hezbollah was using to store drones.

That strike was carried out in response to two rockets fired from southern Lebanon into Israel—an attack that no group claimed responsibility for, and which Hezbollah denied any involvement in.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, Israel continues to conduct airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon, claiming they target Hezbollah military sites.

Israel also accuses the Lebanese state of failing to fulfill its commitments under the agreement, particularly the dismantling of Hezbollah’s military arsenal and its removal from border areas.

The agreement stipulated the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from all areas occupied during the war. However, Tel Aviv has retained its troops in five strategic highlands, giving it a vantage point to oversee vast territories on both sides of the border.
