Ethiopia’s determination about the second GERD filling
The country’s National Security Council said on Saturday that Internal and external forces have been menacing Ethiopia’s stability and trying to enter it in the disorder, but without naming them.
The Council lead by Prime Minister Abey Ahmed, affirmed that despite the conspiracies and pressures, Addis Ababa will move forward with the scheduled second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). It also affirmed that the government would take many corrective procedures against the internal forces that are applying foreign plans.
The Council also stated that external forces are conscious that if Ethiopia succeeds in facing all the challenges, it would become an influential regional state.
As programmed, the second filling of the mega-dam would go fast in July/August although appeals and alerts from Sudan and Egypt against Ethiopia’s unilateral move.
An obligatory and comprehensive agreement
The two countries affirm the necessity to attain an obligatory and complete deal that ensures the rights and interests of the three countries and comprises a tool for settling disagreements about the filling and operation of the dam.
In the meantime, Cairo has strengthened its diplomatic activities in all Africa. During the past two days, Egyptian ambassadors in Comoros, Burundi and Cote d’Ivoire gather with many ministers and officials in a try to strengthen relations and support cooperation.
All of these progresses come as Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s recent African visited Kenya, Comoros, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Niger and Tunisia. He distributed letters from President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi about Egypt’s position from the GERD disagreement.
Previously this month, talks hosted in Kinshasa finished without advancement. On its part, Addis Ababa rejects a suggestion by Cairo and Khartoum to enter the European Union, the United Nations, the United States and the African Union in the mediating.
