After condemning a worker’s death.. FIFA puts Qatar in embarrassing position, reveals its true face
FIFA confirmed the death of a migrant worker at a World Cup resort in Qatar after the Qatari government tried to ignore the incident, but a FIFA spokesman said in a statement: “FIFA is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts and sympathies with the worker’s family. Once FIFA learns about the incident, we contact the local authorities to request more details, it is not clear what the worker was doing or the circumstances surrounding the death of the person”.
International embarrassment for Qatar
CNN, the American network, confirmed that FIFA’s statements about the death of a worker at a resort which was used as a training base for the teams participating in the World Cup is a major international embarrassment for the Qatari authorities who tried to hide all violations during the tournament, and allow the enthusiasm accompanying the World Cup to beautify its distorted image. The president of the World Cup in Qatar said that between 400 and 500 migrant workers have died in projects related to the tournament.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in Qatar said: “Because of the incident in question, he was working on property not under the authority of the Supreme Committee, and the deceased was working as a contractor not under the authority of the Supreme Committee, and this matter is being dealt with by the relevant government authorities”. The Committee added that “there is follow-up with the relevant authorities to ensure that we are updated on the investigation on a regular basis, and have established contact with the deceased’s family to ensure that the relevant information is transmitted”.
A Qatari government official confirmed that authorities are investigating the incident, adding, “If the investigation concludes that safety protocols are not being followed, the company will be subject to legal procedures and severe financial penalties”.
