Al-Burhan: The only way to hand over power is ‘consensus or elections’
President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said on Wednesday that the armed forces “look forward to the day when they see an elected national government that will take over the burden of running the country from them”.
Al-Burhan said, “The only way for the elected government is through national consensus or going to elections, and not through calls for demonstrations and sabotage”.
Nothing prevents the right to expression from being exercised through “peaceful demonstration that respects the preservation of public and private property and does not harm citizens’ interests”, he said.
This came when he inspected, on Wednesday afternoon, the Special Forces south of Khartoum.
Al-Burhan praised the “professional training and high morale of the Sudanese Special Forces, which suits their specific tasks”, pledging to continue preparing them and raising their capabilities to reach the highest standards.
The Sudanese army “will not flinch in its duty to work for the achievement and sustainability of the country’s security and stability”, he said.
Sudan has seen almost daily protests since the army’s actions last October, when it removed the civilian component of the transitional government.
