Are the Muslim Brotherhood Politically Sacrificing Al-Joulani to Seize Power? What Is Their Plan in Syria?

Egyptian journalist Mohamed El-Baz stated that the comments made by Amer Al-Bou Salama, the General Observer of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, on Al-Jazeera confirm that the Brotherhood has played no role in Syria from 2011 until now because they were absent from the country. When asked about the group’s role, Al-Bou Salama mostly spoke about the Brotherhood’s opposition to Hafez Al-Assad’s regime, the suffering they endured as a result, and the events of Hama in 1982.

During a Facebook live session titled “Al-Bissat Ahmadi”, El-Baz added that the Muslim Brotherhood began crafting heroic narratives about their alleged jihad against Bashar Al-Assad starting in 2011, even though they were outside Syria. Those who protested against Bashar Al-Assad had no connection to the Brotherhood, indicating that the group is trying to reposition itself on the Syrian political map.

El-Baz explained that the relationship between the Brotherhood and Al-Joulani can be summarized in a statement by Amer Al-Bou Salama: “Our relationship with the new situation is based on continuous communication, adaptation, cooperation, and support.”

According to reports in the Egyptian newspaper Al-Dostour, El-Baz also noted that the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood has learned from the mistakes of their Egyptian counterparts. He explained that any regime that comes to power immediately after a revolution will fail quickly because it cannot meet the high expectations of the people.

El-Baz recalled that Dr. Yasser Ali, the presidential spokesperson during Mohamed Morsi’s rule, conducted studies after 2011 that concluded that whoever governs after a revolution will fail quickly due to the mismatch between high expectations and limited resources. Based on this, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Guidance Bureau decided not to nominate a presidential candidate. They even approached several political figures to support them, but an American directive eventually pushed them to run for the presidency.

El-Baz added that there was internal opposition within the Brotherhood to participating in the elections for pragmatic reasons: they knew they would not be able to resolve the accumulated problems. The Syrian Brotherhood seems to have learned this lesson and is allowing the Al-Nusra Front to govern and take the spotlight, planning to seize power afterward.

In conclusion, El-Baz asserted that the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood is executing a secret plan to politically sacrifice Abu Mohammad Al-Joulani so that the Syrian people see the Brotherhood as the only prepared alternative to govern.
