Barham Salih and Al-Kadhimi: Iraqi emphasis on the need for calm and the fight against terrorism
Iraqi President Barham Salih met, on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in a meeting that emphasized the need for political calm and the fight against terrorism.
The two sides stressed the importance of solidarity among all, strengthening the national unity, strengthening the internal front, and preventing any escalation that would be exploited by those who seek to exploit Iraq and its people.
During the meeting, Salih and al-Kadhimi urged “vigilance and caution against attempts by the remnants of terrorism to destabilize security and stability, and support the heroic security agencies to carry out their duties to the fullest”.
The importance of ensuring security and stability, the commitment to calm and the need for a careful and responsible dialog among politicians to discuss the crisis and develop a clear roadmap and solutions that protect the supreme national interest, reassure citizens and achieve their interests and aspirations was also stressed.
The meeting comes two days after al-Kadhimi called on protesters to vacate government buildings, direct security forces to protect them, and present a new initiative to resolve the crisis.
In a statement issued Monday, al-Kadhimi presented an initiative to resolve the current crisis, which includes inviting all political parties to sit at the dialog table.
Iraq is in the throes of an impending crisis between supporters of Sadr’s movement, who are protesting against corruption and quotas, and the pro-Iran Coordination Framework camp; seeking to form a consensual government and pushing his candidate, Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, to lead it.
