‘bloody October’ – Houthi terrorism leaves 126 victims in Yemen’s

Yemen’s National Investigation Mechanism revealed that 126 civilians were killed or injured by Houthi fire last October in eight governorates.

In a report, the National Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of Human Rights Violations stated that it had documented and investigated 221 incidents of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law during the month of October 2022.

The report recorded 75 incidents in which Houthi militias targeted civilians in different governorates, leaving 29 people dead, including 5 women, 9 children, and 58 wounded, including 5 women and 16 children, during Bloody October.

Yemen’s National Investigation Mechanism also recorded 21 victims of landmines and Houthi bombs, including three men killed and 18 wounded, including five children and three women.

The report documented 95 victims of arbitrary detention by Houthi in Amanat Sanaa, Hajjah, Saada, Taiz, Lahj, Dhamar and Marib governorates, and 51 incidents of destruction of public and private property, in addition to documenting 7 incidents of torture and sexual violence.

The committee said its teams conducted a direct and immediate investigation into the shelling and targeting of civilians and the explosion of Houthi landmines in Taiz province, which killed and injured a number of civilians, and went down to the areas of Karsh and Sharija in Lahij province.

It also heard “a number of victims in the areas of Maris and Qa’tabah in the governorate of Al-Dali, and in the areas of Ad Durayhimi, At Tuhayta and Hays in the governorate of Hodeidah,” according to the report.

The National Committee is a Yemeni mechanism supported by the United Nations and the Arab League. It monitors and investigates crimes committed on Yemeni territory by all parties and was established pursuant to a 2015 presidential decree.

It is also the only body responsible for investigating human rights allegations in Yemen after the Arab League bloc in the Human Rights Council overthrew a group of international eminent experts on Yemen last year.

Only Yemeni civilians continue to pay the price for the escalation of Houthi militias, which have continued to claim more lives, drive innocent people to flee and leave their homes.

The Houthi’s deliberate, retaliatory attacks and landmines in just 72 hours killed 16 civilians, including 10 children, in several governorates, according to a toll compiled by Al Ain News from official and UN sources.
