Considered among the most powerful in the world: North Korea introduces a new tank into service

North Korea unveiled, during a military exercise, a new model of tank equipped with a drone protection system.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a large-scale military drill during which a new battle tank was revealed, described as a key component in the modernization of the North Korean army, according to state media on Friday.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that the exercise took place on Thursday at a training ground in Pyongyang, involving armored units that fired anti-tank missiles, as well as rear support units that targeted simulated enemy drones and helicopters in preparation for the advance of infantry and armored forces.

According to the agency, the tank features enhanced mobility, firepower, and advanced defensive systems, including protection against missiles and drones.

It added that the North Korean leader “watched with great satisfaction as the tanks advanced powerfully, shaking the ground,” expressing his approval of what he described as a display embodying the courage and valor of the army.

The agency quoted Kim as saying, “We have achieved significant success and notable progress in modernizing the tank industry,” adding, “I am convinced that there is no armored weapon in the world with a self-defense capability as strong as that of this tank.”

The exercise comes amid rising regional tensions, following North Korea’s missile tests and the recent conclusion of joint spring military drills between South Korea and the United States.

The unveiling of the new main battle tank follows North Korea’s earlier introduction of the “Cheonma-20” main battle tank during a military parade in October last year.

Images released by North Korean state media showed Kim Ju-ae, Kim’s daughter, believed to be a potential successor, riding in a tank alongside her father during her latest appearance at a major military event.

The agency stated that Thursday’s training aimed to “familiarize units with coordination methods and combat orders” in offensive operations of subordinate tactical units, in order to enhance their offensive capabilities in striking, assaulting, and seizing enemy anti-tank defensive lines.
