Convergence of Views Strengthens Relations Between Morocco and the UAE

The UAE ambassador emphasizes the success of the Moroccan king in securing an influential position in foreign policy thanks to his open policy.

The UAE Ambassador to Morocco, Ahmed Al Dhaheri, affirmed that Morocco has achieved an influential position on the global stage due to the unique soft power policy of the kingdom. He praised the open policy adopted by King Mohammed VI since his accession to the throne in July 1999, succeeding his late father, King Hassan II. This policy has strengthened relations with friendly and Arab countries, particularly with the UAE.

According to, Al Dhaheri highlighted the importance of Morocco adopting an open foreign policy towards all regional and international forces under King Mohammed VI, making the kingdom an emerging and leading country among the most developed nations, as evidenced by economic, scientific, and social indicators, as well as the geopolitical reality.

Rabat will celebrate the Throne Day on July 30, which coincides with the twenty-fifth anniversary of King Mohammed VI‘s ascension to power following the death of his father, King Hassan II, at a time when the kingdom was facing numerous internal and external challenges. The king has succeeded in building a new Morocco that has accumulated many achievements.

Morocco has adopted a foreign policy that avoids alliances and stays away from areas of polarization between different international actors, while strengthening cooperation with friendly countries and establishing close relations with them, especially the Gulf countries, notably the UAE. The bilateral relations between the two countries have developed over the last quarter of a century, as evidenced by the positions of both countries on various regional and international issues.

According to the same source, the UAE ambassador in Rabat stated that the Moroccan king “has maintained the reputation and image of Morocco as a country of solidarity, religious coexistence, and a meeting point of civilizations, inspiring other countries with its exemplary experience in launching initiatives, such as the National Initiative for Human Development and the initiative to enable Sahel countries to access the Atlantic Ocean, as well as its experience in managing various crises and disasters like the Covid-19 pandemic and the Al Haouz earthquake.”

He added that the years of King Mohammed VI‘s reign “represent an inspiring success story thanks to the values that Morocco enjoys, based on the unity between the throne and the people, embodied in humanitarian, social, and political issues to face present challenges and future constraints.” He emphasized that the values of solidarity have enabled Morocco to face the Arab Spring’s winds with firmness and determination, to stand with the throne in countering external threats, to defend territorial integrity, and to achieve values of solidarity and mutual aid between different regions and provinces of Morocco to save the victims of the Al Haouz earthquake.

He also stressed that “in a quarter of a century, the king has succeeded in leading a quiet revolution that has changed the contours of the Moroccan kingdom in the present and will change them in the future, by hosting the global event of the FIFA World Cup in 2030, in collaboration with Spain and Portugal, beautifully illustrating the meeting of geography and history, showcasing the genius of King Mohammed VI.”

Bilateral relations between Morocco and the UAE have seen remarkable development over the past twenty-five years, as confirmed by Al Dhaheri, noting that the UAE is the most visited foreign destination by the Moroccan king, with more than eight visits, which has contributed to elevating the relations between the two countries and enhancing the partnership to renewed and diversified strategic dimensions, thanks to the wisdom of the leaders of both nations.

He noted that “this period has witnessed the signing of agreements in various sectors that have contributed to increasing trade volume from less than 100 million dollars in 1999 to 1.3 billion dollars in 2023, and from less than 1 billion dollars in 1999 to 30 billion dollars in 2023.” These figures illustrate these exemplary and inspiring successes.

The political relations between Morocco and the UAE have always been marked by continuous consultation and convergence of views between the leaders of both countries, as well as mutual support in regional and international forums. Abu Dhabi and its leadership have always been in solidarity with Morocco since the announcement of the Green March in 1975 to the constant support of the UAE for the Moroccan Sahara issue, by taking the initiative to open the UAE General Consulate in Laayoune on November 4, 2020. Likewise, Rabat has not hesitated to support the sovereignty of the UAE and to confront the terrorist threats on the three islands occupied by Iran, according to the same source.

The UAE ambassador to Morocco emphasized the unity of values of solidarity and the depth of the fraternal ties that unite the leaders and peoples of the two nations in combating terrorism, promoting peace, and achieving development. The UAE has expressed its humanitarian and fraternal solidarity with the victims of the Al Haouz earthquake by announcing an air bridge for humanitarian aid and sending a search and rescue team to participate in the relief operations for the earthquake victims.
