Dabaiba officially submits candidacy for Presidential Elections in Libya
The head of Libya’s interim government, Abdulhamid Dabaiba, submitted his candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled for the end of December, on Sunday, on the eve of the closure of the door for applications to run in the elections.
Dabaiba presented his candidacy papers at the High National Elections Commission headquarters in Tripoli, according to live footage broadcast by state television.
On Saturday, Parliament Speaker Aguila Salah submitted his official nomination papers for the upcoming presidential elections at the High Electoral Commission headquarters in Benghazi.
Speaking at a press conference after presenting his candidacy papers, Salah said: “I came today to the headquarters of the High National Elections Commission in Benghazi to present the documents required to run for the office of President of the Libyan Republic”.
The planned elections are still shrouded in uncertainty amid disputes over constitutional rules.
On November 8th, Electoral Commission of Libya began receiving applications from candidates running in the presidential and parliamentary elections. The Electoral Commission of Libya announced the start of distributing electoral cards to eligible voters.
After the nomination period was opened, Libyan politicians and public figures presented their nomination papers, including Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar, leader of the Libyan National Army; Saif al-Islam Kadhafi, son of late Libyan leader Mouammar Kadhafi; former Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan; and former Minister of the Interior of the former al-Wefaq government, Fathi Bachagha.
Some polling stations belonging to the High National Elections Commission witnessed armed attacks and acts of sabotage by some militias, gunmen and outlaws in an attempt to disrupt the elections, despite the threat of international sanctions against their strongholds.
