Death of Mahsa Amini: EU considers sanctions against Iran
The European Union (EU) on Thursday threatened Iran with a new “sanctions package” over its “repression of demonstrations”.
“The EU is considering additional sanctions on Iran,” said Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief.
“The bloc’s foreign ministers will discuss further sanctions on Tehran during their next meeting,” Borrell said in a press statement from Prague.
Protests broke out in most Iranian cities and echoed in several countries outside Iran after the girl, Mahsa Amini, died after being arrested by Iran’s morality police.
The Iranian authorities have responded to the protests with “severe repression”, using live bullets, gas and arrests, and have cut off Internet access in many cities in an attempt to dampen the protests, which have been fueled by the deteriorating economic situation.
The protests over the death of Amina took on a new twist, as hundreds of girls, including officials from around the world, showed their solidarity by cutting their hair on the air.
Human rights groups said thousands were arrested and that hundreds were killed and injured in the “repression of demonstrations”.
