Drone Attacks on Military Sites in Iran
At a time when the world wants to issue new sanctions against Iran for providing Russia with drones in its war against Ukraine, Iran announced Saturday night (Sunday) that its defenses confronted a drone attack on a military site in the central province of Isfahan.
The official IRNA news agency quoted a defense ministry statement as saying that at 8:30 p.m. GMT, a drone attack was launched on a military complex belonging to the defense ministry.
“The complex’s air defenses shot down one of the drones, while two drones were surrounded and exploded,” the statement said.
Iranian conflict
“At least two people were killed in the blast at an ammunition factory,” AFP quoted a security source as saying, without providing further details.
But the Defense Ministry said the attack “did not cause any disruption to the operation of the complex.”
The attack caused no injuries, but only “minor damage to the roof” of a building, it said.
“There was an explosion at one of the military centers of the Defense Ministry,” Mohammad Reza Jan Nasari, deputy head of security for Isfahan province, told the semi-official Fars news agency.
The blast caused some damage, “but fortunately there were no injuries,” Jan Nasari said.
The official Iranian news agency later said the explosion was caused by “small drones”, adding that an investigation was opened to determine the cause.
Target site anonymous activity
The authorities did not give details of the target site’s activity, which is north of the large city of Isfahan.
A video widely shared on social media, which Agence France Presse could not verify, shows a powerful explosion at the site and images of ambulances heading towards the area.
Nuclear sites
Isfahan is one of Iran’s most important military industrial cities, with many military factories and the famous Natanz facility, one of Iran’s most important nuclear facilities.
Iran has many well-known nuclear research sites in the region, including a uranium conversion plant.
The targeted compound is located about 440 kilometers (270 miles) south of Tehran.
