Hans Grundberg concludes initial round of talks to open roads in Taiz and other governorates

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed Washington’s commitment to supporting a lasting solution to the conflict during a phone conversation with U.N. special envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg.

In a statement late Friday, the US State Department said Blinken stressed to the UN envoy to Yemen the need to open roads to Taiz and begin a comprehensive peace process.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden welcomed the announcement of an extended truce in Yemen, praising Saudi Arabia for “courageous leadership” in efforts to extend the truce.

“The past two months in Yemen have been among the most peaceful periods since the terrible war began seven years ago, thanks to a truce concluded last April”, Biden said in a statement.

He added that Oman, Egypt and Jordan played a role that made the truce possible, and that “the United States will remain engaged in this process for the coming weeks and months” and will focus on deterring threats to friends and partners.

“The parties to the conflict in Yemen have agreed to the UN proposal to renew the current truce in Yemen for an additional two months”, UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg said earlier.
