Bloomberg, citing a knowledgeable source, reported that Russia and Ukraine will exchange 90 prisoners of war today, Wednesday, under an agreement mediated by the United Arab Emirates. This step follows a series of successful initiatives led by the UAE to promote peace and stability in the region.
UAE Mediation Efforts
Ukrainian media reported last week that the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Ukrainian Parliament, Dmytro Lubinets, announced his government’s plans for a major prisoner exchange with Russia with the help of the UAE, according to Reuters. It is noteworthy that Russia and Ukraine have previously conducted prisoner exchanges in the context of the ongoing war for the past 27 months, which began with a Russian military operation in Ukraine, a former Soviet state.
Previous Exchanges
In the last prisoner exchange, which took place in June, both Russia and Ukraine exchanged 90 prisoners. The UAE also mediated this operation.
At that time, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the country’s efforts continued to support all initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the two countries. It explained that “dialogue, de-escalation, and the diplomatic path are the only ways to resolve the crisis, thereby mitigating its humanitarian impacts.”
