EU calls for truce in Yemen during Ramadan

Despite the continued intransigence of the Houthi militias and their history of breaches of international humanitarian law, Europe hopes for a truce in Yemen during Ramadan.

The European Union said Tuesday that a truce on the occasion of Ramadan would be very welcome to alleviate the suffering of the people in Yemen.

The EU added in a tweet on its Twitter account that it encourages all parties to engage in UN-led peace efforts to achieve a lasting political settlement of the conflict.

Hours earlier, the European Union condemned the Houthi attack with missiles and drones on civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, stressing the need to stop it.

In a statement, the EU urged the parties to the conflict to engage constructively with the UN envoy to Yemen, in order to reach a comprehensive political agreement to end the war.

The Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) announced last Thursday that it would host a Yemeni-Yemeni consultation to end the state of war and move towards peace.

GCC Secretary General Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf said at a press conference in Riyadh that the council will host Yemeni-Yemeni consultations from March 29 to April 7, 2022, calling on all Yemeni parties without exception to these consultations.

The Yemeni-Yemeni consultations are aimed at resolving the crisis and urging all parties to accept a comprehensive ceasefire that includes a military, security and political process focus. They will discuss strengthening state institutions, administrative reform and combating corruption, as well as the establishment of relief mechanisms in Yemen.

The Houthi militia, which is classified as a terrorist group, rejected these consultations and escalated its aggression significantly, including a series of terrorist attacks on Saudi territory, which attempted to target vital civilian and economic installations in an attempt to threaten the largest energy source in the world.

Houthi militias have destroyed the customs and spiritual traditions that prevailed in the month of Ramadan, even reaching mosques, and turning into propaganda platforms for the pricing of war.

Houthi militias has robbed the spirituality of the holy month on the eve of continuous salary deprivation, lack of employment opportunities, and loss of services, as well as their heavy-handed tactics of preventing Taraweeh prayers as heresy, as well as closing loudspeakers during the five prayers.

The conflict in Yemen, caused by Houthi militias, has dragged the country into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and killed 377,000 people, both directly and indirectly, according to previous UN reports.
