European Parliament pressures to classify Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization – Details

Germany’s representative in the European Parliament Hanna Neumann has confirmed that members of the European Parliament will continue to push for the designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, referring to the 3-day meeting of the European Parliament on the uprising of the Iranian people.

In an interview with Iran International, Neumann pointed out that in addition to requesting the inclusion of the IRGC in the list of terrorist groups, the members of the European Parliament want the nuclear deal to be suspended, more visas issued and wider support for the Iranian people.

The member of the European Parliament also said, referring to the obstacles to designating the IRGC as a terrorist group, that a number of EU member states oppose the inclusion of the IRGC in the list of terrorist organizations and prevent such action.

Neumann noted that the uprising of the Iranian people continues despite the regime’s heavy repression, saying, “Revolutions may take time, but in the European Union we will continue to spread awareness of what is happening in Iran.”

She confirmed the continuation of the European Parliament’s discussions on how to support the uprising of the Iranian people, and said that the European Parliament discussed at its meeting on Tuesday how to form a fund to support strikes in Iran and the role of the European Union in the formation of such a fund.

The German delegate expressed her dissatisfaction with the disagreements between the members of the Solidarity Council for Democracy and Freedom in Iran and said: “Anyone who wants to see the departure of the Islamic Republic must unite first with others, to be assured that there will be a referendum, and in the coming stages he must look for his political struggles.”

Western politicians are targeted by different groups after meeting with figures who oppose the Iranian regime, Hanna Newman said, adding: “This is so destructive, we need all our energy to beat the regime, not to fight each other, our real enemy elsewhere.”

In March, a European official revealed that there is a growing consensus among EU member states to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization; because of his military support for Russia in the war against Ukraine.

Aksyus website quoted Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis as saying: “There are very serious discussions taking place in Brussels about designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization.”

“There is a growing consensus about this resolution… There are practical and legal issues that need to be resolved, but I think we might get to that step,” Landsbergis said.

Washington designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization in April 2019, and personnel of the state military organization are now banned from entering the United States and could face up to 20 years in prison.

This is the first time that Washington has formally designated a part of a foreign country’s military as a terrorist organization, especially since the IRGC is one of the most important elements within Iran’s armed forces.
