Fears in Iraq of new Iranian bombardment under the pretext of Mossad

A number of Iraqi politicians expressed their fears that Iran would carry out new missile attacks targeting Iraqi cities under the pretext of the presence of the Israeli Mossad, similar to the attack that targeted sites in Erbil, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Former MP Mithal al-Alusi warned on Thursday of new Iranian bombardments in a number of cities, calling on the government to take serious action against violations of Iraqi sovereignty.

The silence of the Iraqi government towards the Iranian bombardment of Erbil, and the statements of condemnation and rejection and the failure to take real measures through international action will push Tehran to commit more such aggressive operations against Iraq and Iraqis, he said.

In the midst of these positions, Hakim al-Zamili, Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, said in a joint press conference with Kurdish Minister of the Interior Rebar Ahmed on Thursday that the Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, will be summoned to discuss the circumstances and repercussions of the Iranian attack.

Al-Zamili added after the meeting of the parliamentary fact-finding committee charged with investigating the Iranian attack on Erbil, that the committee will have various measures, including international steps, and that is why we will collect documents and data.

Some political sources in Iraq, such as the Sovereignty Alliance, talked about the possibility of hosting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and the Ministers of Defense and the Interior in the parliamentary committee investigating the Iranian attack.

The attack was carried out by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the death of two of its officers in an Israeli bombing near Damascus.

Baghdad and Erbil agreed on Monday to form a committee to investigate the missile strike. The president of the region, Netchirvan Barzani, met with the president of Al-Kadhimi in the framework of the latter’s visit to the Iraqi Kurdistan region to discuss the missile attack on Erbil.

Al-Kadhimi and the president of the region also said the attack was a serious development and a flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, an attack that endangers the security, safety and stability of all of Iraq.

Barzani denied the existence of any Israeli base in the Kurdistan region, saying that this is just a rumor. The Iraqi prime minister said, “We are looking with deep concern at the attack, and we came today to Erbil to support you, and we are here to support the Kurdistan region”.

On Monday, the leaders of the pro-Iranian Shiite coordination framework called on the Iraqi government and parliament to form committees to investigate news of the targeting of a place in Erbil, but the Iraqi Hezbollah group, which is linked to the Revolutionary Guards, criticized voices that reject the attack and call for an investigation.

The three Iraqi presidencies condemned the attack. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, and handed him a protest note, asking for clarification on the bombing of the city of Erbil.
