Global expectations to increase international support for Tunisia after the new constitution
Tunisian President Kais Saied’s many political steps in the country to confront the Brotherhood, move the country forward, and improve its conditions have received huge domestic, Arab, and international support that promises a better future.
Fitch, an international credit agency, confirmed that Tunisia’s support will continue after the approval of the new constitution. It indicated that Tunisia will reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund in the second half of 2022, as official lenders will continue to support the country after the approval of the new constitution.
It added: “It is now possible for Tunisia to reach an agreement with the IMF, without an agreement with the unions, because the constitution provides a stronger basis for legislative action.”
“Without funding, Tunisia’s international reserves are expected to gradually decrease from $8.3 billion at the end of June 2022 and the dinar’s value drop,” an international agency said.
This comes after the referendum on the new constitution, whose final results are expected to be announced tomorrow, Saturday, and its entry into force, after its publication in the Official Gazette. The percentage of “yes” votes in preliminary results was 94.6%, while the response rate was “no” 5.40%.
A survey of voters conducted by the Sigma Conseil Foundation showed that 92.3% of eligible voters who participated in the referendum supported Said’s new constitution. The Supreme Electoral Commission estimated the initial turnout at 27.5%.
The referendum, which was organized last Monday, is one of a series of exceptional measures that Tunisian President Kais Saied imposed on July 25, 2021. These measures include dismissing the government, appointing other ministers, dissolving the Judiciary Council and the parliament, passing legislation through presidential decrees, and advancing the parliamentary elections until December 17.
