He accuses citizens of apostasy and treason: the dismissed Brotherhood-affiliated mufti Sadiq Al-Ghariani attacks the Libyan judiciary

Statements by the dismissed mufti Sadiq Al-Ghariani, known for his close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and for using his religious edicts to serve political agendas hostile to the Libyan National Army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, have sparked widespread outrage.

In strongly worded remarks, Al-Ghariani attacked the country’s highest judicial authority, comparing the Constitutional Court to what he called “a mosque of harm,” describing it as “a mosque of hypocrites and unbelief,” in a direct assault on the Libyan judiciary.

Former Libyan ambassador to Syria, Mohamed Shabane Al-Merdas, sharply criticized Al-Ghariani’s statements, describing them as “a direct insult to the Libyan judiciary and to state employees.”

In a Facebook post, Al-Merdas asserted that Al-Ghariani “accuses citizens of apostasy and treason” through such statements, which pose a serious threat to social peace and undermine trust in judicial institutions.

He questioned indignantly whether Al-Ghariani’s remarks could be considered “a call to destroy the Court,” warning strongly against the consequences.

Al-Merdas called for the need to curb Al-Ghariani’s actions in order to preserve the authority of the Libyan judiciary and respect for state institutions, noting that this is not the first time the Brotherhood-affiliated mufti has attempted to use his fatwas for political gain.

Sadiq Al-Ghariani had previously stated on several occasions that everything issued by Aguila Saleh, Khalifa Haftar and their sons is illegal, claiming that the establishment of the Constitutional Court was intended to paralyze the judiciary and the Administrative Court, comparing it to the harmful mosque built by the hypocrites during the Prophet’s era.
