How does the decision to dissolve municipalities in Tunisia affect the network of services affiliated with the Ennahdha Movement?

The decision to dissolve municipalities in light of political reforms

A decree dissolving the municipal councils was issued in the latest issue of the Official Gazette on 9 March, the first chapter of which referred to the dissolution of all the municipal councils until the election of new councils.

Tunisian President Kais Saied, while chairing the Council of Ministers, announced that the Council considered “a text related to dissolving the municipal councils and compensating them with special representation.” He added, according to a video, which was published by the Tunisian presidency through its official page on social media, that the Council also considered “two decrees related to the revision of the electoral law for members of the municipal councils, and the election of the National Council of Regions.”

The decision to dissolve the municipal councils came; In order to complete all means towards confronting corruption in various sectors of the state, President Saied confirmed this after the dissolution of the municipal councils, which he described as a battle against corruption, in addition to the fact that this decision coincides with the fulfillment of the road map and the regularity of the opening session of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People.

Liberation of Fatherland from the Brotherhood

Prominent Brotherhood leaders remain in several municipal posts, said Tunisian political analyst Hazem al-Qasouri. Despite their involvement in financial corruption, appropriating public funds, and facilitating suspicious operations for Ennahda and serving its goals in violation of Tunisian law, they continue to carry out their tasks, he said.

In a special statement, he added that the decision to dissolve the municipalities is part of the exceptional measures announced by President Kais Saied in July 2021, to liberate the country from the terrorist group that destroyed the country during its 10 years of rule.

He said that the preliminary results of the 2018 elections for the Tunisian mayors showed that the Ennahdha Movement controlled the largest share of municipalities, and the dissolution of the municipal councils is a severe blow to Ennahdha and its gangs, and the accountability train has started and will not stop until all those who committed crimes against Tunisia are held accountable.
