How does the UAE strive to enhance sustainability and diversify energy sources?


The United Arab Emirates (UAE) aims to achieve a carbon-free future through international cooperation and the promotion of cutting-edge technologies that support the development of the energy sector. This is done within a comprehensive perspective that targets enhancing international cooperation and collaborative efforts with various countries worldwide, in order to drive sustainable development and implement numerous leading energy projects globally.

The UAE is working on diversifying energy sources and making a positive impact in climate action, indicating that it has taken practical steps towards a genuine transition to clean and renewable environmentally friendly energy.

Global recognition of the UAE’s efforts

International and regional organizations have praised the UAE’s role and efforts in promoting sustainability and diversifying energy sources, highlighting the country’s interest in renewable energy projects, particularly solar energy within and outside the UAE, despite being one of the world’s largest energy producers.

Climate Summit in the UAE

The UAE has consistently made efforts in the field of climate action, including its current preparations to host the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will take place between November 30th and December 12th of this year. This conference is considered the most important and largest international conference on climate action, with the participation of world leaders.

COP28 will serve as a global platform to showcase the UAE’s initiatives, environmental laws, strategic plans, and international environmental agreements that contribute to combating climate change. This interest and efforts did not arise recently but date back to the establishment, specifically since 1975 when the UAE Cabinet issued a decision to establish the Supreme Committee for the Environment, tasked with coordinating between the seven Emirates regarding environmental issues and representing the country in scientific conferences and joining international agreements.

Fahd Al-Shalimi, President of the Gulf Forum, stated that the UAE is making significant efforts in establishing sustainability and diversifying energy sources. It has taken big steps and implemented many projects such as Masdar City and solar cells towards Dubai, aiming to increase non-oil sources, including tourism, manufacturing, re-manufacturing, commercial centers, and Abu Dhabi is also moving towards military manufacturing to preserve the environment.

Al-Shalimi added that there are significant efforts to preserve the environment, such as planting mangrove trees, increasing water sources, and the entire UAE has a plan, even Sharjah has energy sources.

Moreover, the direction towards solar and nuclear energy and Barakah stations at the moment, which are plans that demonstrate achievements. The UAE also does not suffer from pollution because they maintain safety measures and reduce pollution. Important conferences also demonstrate the country’s culture in diversifying sources of income, not just relying on petroleum, and this has had a positive impact on the country itself.
