Hunger Precedes Aid: Food Warehouse Stormed in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Collapse

In a scene that underscores the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, a crowd of starving people stormed a United Nations World Food Programme warehouse in the central part of the enclave, in a tragic incident that resulted in deaths and injuries.

According to an official statement by the WFP, the incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, was driven by sheer desperation and growing destitution due to the ongoing shortage of basic food supplies and the sluggish flow of humanitarian aid.

The statement indicated that preliminary reports confirmed at least two people were killed and several others injured during the stampede, highlighting the extreme fragility of the humanitarian situation in one of the world’s most besieged regions.

WFP Sounds the Alarm

The World Food Programme warned that the incident reflects a collapse in people’s ability to wait or rely on now-inadequate distribution systems.

In an official statement, the WFP said: “Gaza needs an immediate and massive increase in food aid. This is the only way to reassure people that they will not starve to death.”

This warning comes as field reports confirm that the population is facing the looming threat of famine with each passing day of the blockade.

Gunfire at Distribution Sites

This was not an isolated event. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that 47 Palestinians were injured by gunfire while trying to access food aid in Rafah, in southern Gaza.

According to the UNHCR, the gunfire was carried out by Israeli forces, based on testimonies from humanitarian partners on the ground.

Painful Videos and Critical International Reactions

Similarly, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed deep concern over the “painful scenes” captured on video at distribution points.

He stated: “We have seen the footage from Gaza of a distribution point. These images are deeply disturbing and reflect a failure to protect civilians and to ensure even the minimum of human dignity.”

Dujarric confirmed that the UN and its partners have a detailed plan to deliver aid and called on all parties to comply with it without obstruction or exception.

New Controversial Distribution System

The incident comes just days after Israel announced the implementation of a new aid distribution system in cooperation with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation — a newly registered organization in Geneva that has been criticized for its lack of transparency and alleged ties to Israeli military plans aimed at blocking aid from reaching Hamas.

This system has faced objections from human rights organizations accusing it of politicizing humanitarian work and sidelining the traditional role of UN agencies.

According to political analyst and professor of political science Ayman Al-Raqab, what happened at the WFP warehouse in Gaza is not merely a sign of poverty and hunger, but a complete breakdown of the relief system and a lack of political and humanitarian solutions. He stated: “Gaza is devastated by Netanyahu’s current policies.”

He added: “When people storm aid warehouses, it’s not chaos — it’s a clear expression of the international community’s failure to prevent famine. The blockade and the delays in delivering aid have exceeded the population’s capacity to endure. Israel is managing the aid file with strict security logic and seeks to control its distribution through non-UN entities, raising serious doubts about its real intentions — especially as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is accused of serving military rather than humanitarian agendas.”
