In a series of new sanctions, the European Union targets human rights violators in Iran
According to the Iranian opposition network “Iran International,” the new lists include the prosecutor general and the revolutionary chief (of Isfahan) in the province of Isfahan, as well as the deputy judge of the regional criminal court for the province of Isfahan.
The individuals responsible for the trial of protesters Saleh Marhshami, Majid Kazemi, and Saeed Al-Yaqoubi, who were later executed in May 2023, are also included, according to a statement from the European Council.
A series of new sanctions
The Iranian network further indicates that the sanctions also target the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Isfahan province, who oversaw the response of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to anti-government protests.
It adds that the European Council has also listed the governor of Gilan province and the chairman of the Security Council in Rezvanshahr, who ordered police officers to open fire on protesters during nationwide protests, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, including children. The police chief of Rezvanshahr is also targeted in the new round of sanctions.
Finally, sanctions have been imposed on the governor of Amol city, who is responsible for the killing of two Iranian protesting youths, as well as the commander of the Imam Hussein Guard Corps in Karaj, in connection with the arrest, killing of Mohammad Reza Ghorbani, and the rape of Amrita Abbasi by Karaj security forces.
The Iranian network specifies that the restrictive measures imposed by the European Union now apply to a total of 223 individuals and 37 entities, involving asset freezes, travel bans to the European Union, and the prohibition of providing funds or economic resources to those listed.
The EU member states also call on Iran to halt its violent crackdown on peaceful protests, cease arbitrary arrests, and release all unjustly detained prisoners.
