In Numbers … US Report Reveals Houthi Violations of Education in Yemen

The American Center for Justice has released a report titled “Forgotten Crime” that examines the impact of the war on Yemen’s education sector

A recent human rights report has highlighted the Houthi militia’s violations of the education sector and the effects of the war on Yemen’s education process over the past five years.

The American Center for Justice released a report titled “The Forgotten Crime,” which examines the impact of the war on Yemen’s education sector from 2014 to 2020, the violations of the educational process, and the material and human damage suffered.

“More than 170 thousand male and female teachers living in areas controlled by the Houthi militia have been suffering from a 5-year salary cut despite the group’s financial ability to pay their salaries but are exploiting this humanitarian aspect in political bargaining,” the report said.

“Since September 2014, 1579 teachers have been killed and 2624 injured, 80 per cent of which have been held responsible by the Houthi militia, 621 arrests, 36 forced disappearances, and 142 forced displacements of teachers”.

In Taiz alone, he said, 280 cases of killings and assassinations by the Houthi militia were recorded, along with 180 cases of abductions and enforced disappearances, and 16 cases of assassinations of teachers in Aden province, which is under the control of the Transitional Council, Newsweek reported.

The report stated that it documented the bombing of 21 schools by the Houthi militia and the conversion of 14 schools into military barracks and prisons, in addition to documenting the recruitment of 211 children under the age of 15 by the Houthi militia in the governorates of Sanaa and Amran only last year.

He confirmed that the Houthi group had recruited 57 children from one school, the Al-Alam Al-Iman School in the Bani Hashish district in eastern Sanaa province, all of whom were killed on the front lines.

He also confirmed that the Houthi militia has made fundamental changes in school curricula based on racism and sectarianism, religious and sectarian incitement, and that it is systematically practicing sectarian incitement through school broadcasts in 12 governorates it controls.

He said the Houthi militia singled out a series of violations against teachers, including the dismissal of 286 teachers from their jobs, displacement from their villages, homes and schools, and replacement of its members.

The US Center for Justice said it monitored the Houthi militia forcing students in hundreds of schools to pay compulsory fees amounting to $5 per month in 12 governorates it controls.

“He said he had verified 500 cases of students killed in Taiz city since the start of the war, due to indiscriminate shelling by Houthi militia on schools and communities.” He also reported that 15 thousand people were displaced and displaced due to the war waged by the Houthi militia on the city.

The center said it has verified the deaths of 21 teachers and students over the past two years as a result of mines planted by Houthi militias.

“I am sure the Houthi group will use the summer courses as an occasion to spread its ideology and supply the front lines, even if they are young, to fighters,” he said.

He said the war in Yemen has knocked education out of the World Education Quality Assessment based on the World Economic Forum’s Education Quality Index in Davos.
