Iran says 10 ISIS members arrested days before Ashura

Iranian security forces have arrested 10 ISIS elements over the past three days, the Ministry of Intelligence said Thursday.

“The detainees entered Iran to carry out several terrorist operations against participants in the commemoration of the death of Imam Hussein,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its official website.

The Iranian Ministry did not reveal the identity of the detainees, adding, “These elements entered Iraqi and Turkish territory and were arrested in western and southern Iran.”

The Iranian intelligence ministry also reported that “all the detonation equipment that ISIS elements entered, as well as communication devices and weapons, were seized”.

However, the ministry said two of its members were wounded in clashes with ISIS.

Iran is currently witnessing hundreds of processions and gatherings marking the month of Muharram and the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein.

The country and the rest of the countries where Shiites are located are scheduled to witness the commemoration of this occasion on the tenth of Muharram, which falls on next Sunday, an official holiday in Iran.

On June 6, 2017, ISIS attacked the mausoleum of the Iranian regime’s founder, Rouhollah Khomeini, and the Iranian parliament building, killing 12 people and injuring around 45.
