Iran’s parliament speaker admits: Governance must be reformed in all areas
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday recognized the need for reform of the government in all areas, calling for economic issues to be given priority.
According to the Fars News Agency, the Iranian minister said in a public session of parliament: The problems of the people must be solved and decisions made at the right time.
Last week, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, in rare statements, admitted mistakes in the country’s administration and called for reform of the governing mechanism.
During an interview with Iran’s Channel One television from inside the parliament, Ghalibaf, a former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, asserted that the government of President Ebrahim Raisi had failed to improve the economic and living conditions of Iranians in light of the decline in purchasing power and the collapse of the currency.
“We have made mistakes in the way the country is run, and we have to change our outlook on many things,” the speaker admitted.
He urged the need for serious reforms to the governing mechanism and a review of the way the country is run “so that it can compete with the rest of the world”.
Ghalibaf was a strong supporter of the Iranian president during the June 2021 elections.
“We have had problems and shortcomings in the process of running the country,” Ghalibaf said. “We need to change the way we look at many issues.
Meanwhile, a number of prominent Iranian anti-regime figures in Tehran posted a joint statement on their social media pages, calling 2023 “Iran’s Year of Freedom and Justice.”
Among those who signed the joint text are former Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, activists Hamed Esmaeilion, Nazanin Boniadi, Masih Alinejad, Ali Karimi and Golshifteh Farahani.
“2022 was the year of Iranians’ solidarity despite different trends, and 2023 will be the year of the people’s victory and the year of achieving freedom and justice in Iran,” the joint statement said.
