Iraq: Young Woman and Her Child Killed After Falling from Eighth Floor in “Mysterious” Circumstances

A young woman and her child were killed after falling from the balcony of their apartment in Erbil, northern Iraq, according to a source in the Kurdish security forces.

The source told “Erem News” that “the Erbil police received an urgent call from residents of the Atlantic City residential complex reporting that the young woman, Zeina Ali, aged 26, and her two-year-old daughter had fallen from the eighth floor of the building where they lived.”

The source added that “the incident occurred around 11 p.m. last night, and they died instantly upon hitting the ground. Medical rescue teams were unable to save them.”

The source confirmed that “investigations have not yet determined whether it was a suicide or a criminal case, and an investigative team has been formed with the help of forensic experts to examine the scene of the incident to determine the true causes of the accident.”

Iraq is seeing rising numbers of suicides, with security statistics showing 1,100 suicide cases in 2023, which increased to 1,300 cases in 2024.

International reports indicate that suicide has become a phenomenon in Iraq, with a 175% increase over the past seven years, prompting the Baghdad government to adopt the National Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023-2030.

The Ministry of Interior has attributed the rise in suicide rates to “population density, economic conditions, unemployment, as well as domestic violence and online extortion.”
