Israeli President Herzog may visit Turkey soon, seeks cooperation on gas

Israeli officials confirmed that President Isaac Herzog had received an invitation by phone from his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to visit Turkey.

The visit reveals the Machiavellian character of the Turkish President, who has always publicly attacked Israel while trying to prove himself as a “caliph of the Muslims”, and later changed his approach to open and frank normalization with the occupying Power in implementation of his interests.

The Israel Broadcasting Corporation quoted officials yesterday, saying that “President Herzog was invited during a phone conversation with Turkish President Erdogan”.

They added that “contacts regarding Herzog’s visit to Turkey are at a very advanced stage, and we will now consider the appropriate timing”, according to Sputnik.

“After Herzog’s visit to Turkey, the Turkish side is expected to visit Israel”, the officials said.
In response to Erdogan’s proposal for Israel to build a gas pipeline to Europe through Turkey, Israeli officials made it clear that “any progress with Turkey will not be at the expense of strategic relations with Greece and Cyprus, Israel’s allies”.

The Turkish President said that he is communicating with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, indicating that the Israeli President may visit Turkey.
Erdogan said the joint project to transport gas between Israel, Greece and Cyprus is not viable, calling for transporting gas to Europe through his country.
