Jordanian government announces details of foreign involvement in suspicious plots by Prince Hamzah

The Jordanian government said in a statement during a press conference for Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Sunday: Security agencies have pursued activities targeting the homeland for Prince Hamzah bin al-Hussein and others.

The statement added that the department close to Prince Hamzah was arrested and “we are trying to deal with Prince Hamzah within the framework of the Hashemite family,” according to the statement, stressing that “the security operation is entirely Jordanian,” and that there is no truth to the involvement of any Jordanian military leaders in the operation.

Observed movements

The Jordanian government’s detailed statement on the arrests of Jordanian figures yesterday, Saturday, came after a long wait. Safadi said: “We observed movements from Prince Hamzah’s inner circle yesterday before the security move, and the security services demanded that those involved be referred to the State Security Court,” he said, noting that authorities had taken full control of the suspicious activity.

Between 14 and 16 people were arrested, in addition to Bassem Awadallah and Sharif Hassan Bin Zeid, he said.

He added that interests converged between those who want to harm the role of Jordan and those who have personal ambitions, noting that the king’s directives are to deal with Prince Hamzah within the framework of the Hashemite family.

He revealed that Prince Hamzah communicated with community figures to incite them to activities that threaten security. He noted that Prince Hamzah had been approached within the Hashemite family to urge him to abandon these activities, stressing that Prince Hamzah had tried to escalate the situation through video messages.

He added that Prince Hamzah dealt with the request of the army commander to stop his activities negatively, and that the investigations revealed the existence of links between Bassem Awadallah and external parties.

He said : “We monitored communication between Bassem Awadallah, al-Sharif Hassan bin Zaid and Prince Hamzah.”

He said that Prince Hamzah had communicated with community figures to incite them to activities that threatened security. Prince Hamzah had recorded two videos in Arabic and English as part of the incitement.

He pointed out that foreign parties were involved in the suspicious plans of Prince Hamzah, and also noted that foreign parties communicated with Prince Hamzah’s wife.

Al-Safadi pointed out that some employed illusions and wishes to serve agendas that seek to destabilize Jordan’s security, adding: “Our country is strong and capable of protecting its security.”

The Senate is rising

During a session of the Jordanian National Assembly on the occasion of the State Centennial on Sunday, the speaker of the Senate said : “We affirm our support for King Abdullah II in preserving Jordan’s stability, as Jordan is a red line and our King is a red line,” he said, stressing the importance of the Jordanian people to avoid “following rumors”.

Parliament Speaker Abdel Moneim Al-Awdat said, “We reject any violation of Jordan’s security.. “Jordan decisively tried to undermine its security and stability yesterday,” he said, noting that “Jordan is facing many challenges, including the economic crisis and the repercussions of the epidemic.” “Our loyalty is to King Abdullah II, full of him and us with him and his crown prince..” “We have to confront greedy, predators, haters, those with foreign agendas and suspicious projects.”

Prince Hamzah bin Al-Hussein had denied that he was arrested in a video and said he was at home with his wife and children, and that the army chief had asked him to stay at home and not to contact anyone.

The Jordan News Agency said that Prince Hamzah is not under arrest or any restrictive measures, and is not under house arrest. The Jordanian Army Chief of Staff also denied the veracity of what was published about the arrest of Prince Hamzah.

An army statement said that as part of a joint comprehensive investigation carried out by security agencies, “Sherif Hassan Bin Zaid, Bassem Awadallah and others were arrested. “He also asked Prince Hamzah to stop the actions and activities of employees to target Jordan’s security and stability.”

The army statement stressed that investigations are ongoing and the results will be disclosed in full transparency and clarity.

The security operation, which was carried out against Jordanian personalities, coincided with a curfew and an intensive security deployment due to the coronavirus conditions in the country, amid expectations of tightening measures, in anticipation of any reaction to the arrests of former military and civilian figures whose names were repeated on social media without any official confirmation from the Jordanian authorities so far.
