Judicial Escalation: Imran Khan’s Party Faces Potential Ban in Pakistan

The Pakistani government plans to take new measures against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told reporters in Islamabad: “The federal government has decided to file a lawsuit aiming to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.”

“To prison”: The Pakistani judiciary strikes Imran Khan‘s wife again Tarar added that the case will be presented to the Supreme Court.

He continued, saying: “We believe there is credible evidence calling for the ban of Tehreek-e-Insaf,” leveling several accusations against Khan, including leaking state secrets and inciting riots.

Khan, a former cricket star who led Pakistan to a World Cup victory in 1992, has been serving a prison sentence for about a year after being convicted of treason, illegal gains, and unlawful marriage. He has also been barred from running in elections.

Khan has faced dozens of cases since his ousting from power in a no-confidence vote in parliament in 2022.

He was removed from his position as Prime Minister in April 2022 and has not made any public appearances since his three-year prison sentence in August for illegally selling official gifts during his term from 2018 to 2022.

Khan claims the government fabricated cases against him to prevent his return to power in the elections last February, a claim that Pakistani authorities deny.

Despite this, the Supreme Court granted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf additional seats in parliament in a historic ruling last week, while overturning a previous ruling against the former Prime Minister for unlawful marriage under Islamic law last Saturday.

Khan is widely regarded as the most popular leader in the country and has a charismatic personality. Khan believes the military is targeting him and wants to exclude him from elections, an accusation the military denies.
