Leaked documents… How did Trump plan to attack Iran in 2021?

According to U.S. reports, federal prosecutors have a 2021 audio recording of former President Donald Trump acknowledging that he kept a secret Pentagon document regarding details of a covert attack on Iran after leaving the White House.

CNN reported that Trump was discussing “a document about a possible attack on Iran,” citing multiple unnamed sources. The US network did not listen to the recording but heard descriptions from the sources.

The recording reportedly shows Trump, who is seeking the Republican Party’s nomination for president in 2024, both understood that he had kept classified material after leaving the White House in 2021. Two sources told CNN: Trump’s statements indicated a desire to share information, but he was aware of limitations on his ability to declassify documents after leaving office.

While the British newspaper The Guardian later confirmed the CNN story, its sources claimed that the document contained a “secret” classification, which might be of interest to the Justice Department, the news organization also reported that the recording was made by one of Trump’s aides.

“The leaks from extremist supporters behind this political persecution are intended to inflame tensions and continue media harassment of President Trump and his supporters,” Trump spokesman Steven Chong told Reuters.

Peter Carr, spokesman for special counsel Jack Smith’s office at the justice ministry, declined to comment.

According to the U.S. network, the Justice Department is investigating whether Mr. Trump broke the law by keeping U.S. government records, some of which were classified as top secret, after he left office in January 2021.

In August, the Department revealed it was investigating Trump to remove the White House records because it believed he was illegally keeping documents, including some intelligence-gathering information and classified human sources – among the most secret US secrets.
