Libya – Security working group calls for commitment to stand by ceasefire agreement
Under the chairmanship of the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, and in the presence of representatives of the United Kingdom, Turkey, Egypt, Italy, France and the African Union (AU), a meeting of the Working Group on Security for Libya is being held in the Tunisian capital.
The meeting was held in the presence of all members of the Joint Military Commission 5+5, on the follow-up to the ceasefire and the disarmament process, according to the same source.
Ms Williams stressed the importance of “maintaining stability and avoiding any form of escalation on the ground”.
“I was delighted to participate directly in the meeting of Libyan and international observers of the ceasefire process (…) They showed enthusiasm and commitment to activate the next steps of the ceasefire agreement”, she said at the end of the meeting.
It also expressed its gratitude to all the parties concerned with the Libyan file for their “support in lobbying for the organization of elections as soon as possible on a solid basis and a consensual constitutional framework in order to realize the aspirations of the Libyan people to elect their representatives”.
