No Concessions… Netanyahu Sets Conditions for Palestinian Autonomy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his firm stance on the future of Palestinian autonomy.

His comments came during a dinner with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, held in a more informal setting that broke with usual protocol.

Netanyahu stated that Palestinians could be granted a form of “autonomy” provided that such powers would pose no threat to Israel’s security. He firmly stressed that security control must remain entirely in Israeli hands, with no room for compromise on this issue.

He explained that, in his view, the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state would become “a platform for the destruction of Israel,” citing the October 2023 Hamas attack as an example of what could happen if Palestinians were granted sovereign authority.

Nevertheless, Netanyahu expressed his belief in the possibility of peace with the Palestinians and with other neighbors in the Middle East, on the condition that Israel retains full “sovereign power and security control” within its borders.

These remarks come amid intense U.S.-led efforts to mediate indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, as questions loom over the territory’s future and the political arrangements to follow the war.
