Quartet Statement Calls on Yemeni Government to Achieve Economic Stability

A Quartet statement called on the Yemeni government to return to Aden in order to assume an effective role in overseeing future international support for economic recovery.

It also urged the government to commit to a comprehensive political solution to the conflict, expressing full support for the United Nations Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg.

This came in a statement issued by the Quartet – which includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States – following a meeting of the countries’ ambassadors in Riyadh on Thursday to discuss the economic situation in Yemen.

The Quartet expressed concern over the depreciation of the Yemeni riyal and the rise in food prices, and its severe impact on the Yemeni economy and the current humanitarian situation, praising the large Saudi contribution, including the grant of oil derivatives to the country.

It also called on the Yemeni government to quickly take all necessary measures in order to start achieving economic stability in Yemen, while affirming the commitment of the Quartet countries to provide support to the government, through the concerned technical advisory committee.

The ambassadors also highlighted the importance of the speedy implementation of the Riyadh Agreement, welcoming the support of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi for this end.
