Saied issues presidential pardon for 274 convicts – Details

Tunisian President Kais Saied issued yesterday a presidential pardon for 274 convicts, to be released.

The presidency said in a statement carried by the official news agency: “Saied was received at the Carthage Palace by Tunisian Minister of Justice Leïla Jaffel, who was accompanied by members of the Amnesty Commission”.

During the meeting, the Tunisian president decided to issue a pardon on the occasion of the Eid Al-Fitr for 274 convicts, which will lead to their release.

Separately, Tunisian authorities announced the arrest of 10 wanted terrorists, including three ISIS members who planned to target security forces.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by the official TAP news agency: “During the holy month of Ramadan, security forces, in coordination with the public prosecution, arrested seven takfiri elements on suspicion of belonging to a terrorist organization” (without naming it).

“These takfiri elements are being prosecuted by court order after they were involved in cases of a terrorist nature”, the ministry said. They are serving prison sentences, including one who was sentenced to 48 years and another who was sentenced to 36 years.

The Ministry of Interior called for the immediate notification of two individuals accused of committing terrorist acts.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement: It is incumbent upon every citizen to report the two individuals, Salim Bin Belgasem Bin Mohamed Al-Kantari and Bilal Bin Al-Habib Bin Al-Taher Jami, who are planning to carry out terrorist operations.

Last March, the authorities announced “the discovery of 148 terrorist cells and the foiling of several terrorist and sabotage operations targeting neighboring countries” (they did not name them).
