“Security and Peace” – How did Morocco contribute to the stability of Africa?

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has said that his country’s election to the African Security Council can strengthen its effective role in the issues of security and peace on the continent.

This came during a press conference by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Morocco’s election last Thursday to the UN Security Council and the African Peace Council for a three-year term is a result of the Kingdom’s role in supporting stability in Africa and the continent, Bourita said.

He pointed out that Morocco’s role is well known both inside and outside the African Union, adding that the continent’s security has been a constant issue for his country for several years.
The African Peace and Security Council is an organ of the African Union concerned with the implementation of its resolutions and is very much like the United Nations Security Council.

The election of the members of the Security and African Peace Council is conducted through its members by the General Assembly of the African Organization.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister noted that the Kingdom has contributed to security and stability in Libya and the Mano River region and has a peacekeeping force in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He also referred to Morocco’s participation in peacekeeping in Somalia, Ivory Coast and Angola; this confirms his country’s contribution to the maintenance of peace and security on the continent.

Bourita pointed out that Morocco has entered the AU Peace and Security Council despite all the maneuvers and attempts against it, but the African government has become successful.

Morocco will work with a vision on how to contribute to the reform of the Security Council, African peace, early warning mechanism, preventive diplomacy and crisis resolution, so that its actions are not limited to reaction and issuing statements, he said.

Morocco had entered the African Peace and Security Council for the second time, the first time between 2018 and 2020, and would now serve on the Council until 2026, which was a great gain for his country.

He pointed out that the resolutions of the Security Council and peace mechanisms were exploited and directed outside the framework in which they operate and in the service of agendas that affect the interests of Morocco, considering that the presence of the Kingdom in its current membership enables it to defend its cause itself.

It is expected that the 35th African Summit of Heads of State and Government will conclude, Sunday, a day after the launch of its effectiveness, amid growing coups in the continent.

The summit was attended by the heads of state of the west of the continent, which has witnessed frequent coups d’État, which has made the issue dominate the agenda of the summit.

The summit is being held in the absence of four countries whose membership was recently suspended by the African Union due to coups d’État: Mali, Sudan, Guinea Conakry and Burkina Faso.
