Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan elected as UAE President


Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan assumes the presidency of the United Arab Emirates in a smooth, consensual and loving rotation that respects the hierarchy of federal authorities.

A tripartite assembly will reduce the legal process set by the UAE constitution to elect a new president following the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, leaving a procession of gifts.

On Saturday, the UAE Supreme Council unanimously elected Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Head of State. Members of the Supreme Council, which is considered a supreme authority made up of the rulers of all the emirates of the Federation, agreed that this man, who carries out a march full of contributions and achievements and a bountiful credit of the love and loyalty of his people, will be the best president for the good of his predecessor.

According to article 51 of the UAE Constitution, the Supreme Council of the Federation elects, from among its members, a President and a Vice-President of the Federation. The Vice-President of the Federation exercises all the powers of the President in his absence for any reason.

Article 52 sets the term of office of the President and the Vice-President at five years and they may be re-elected to the same office.

Article 53 stipulates that, when the office of the President or Vice-President is free of death, resignation or termination of the rule of either of them in his or her Office for some reason, the Supreme Council shall be invited, within one month from that date of the meeting, to elect a successor to fill the vacancy.

A legal document that outlines a smooth transition of the presidency, to go along with a consensus on a figure who intersects with the qualifications of wise leadership, thus strengthening the successful development process of the Emirates and its regional and international radiance.

With his accession to the post, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan becomes the third president in the country’s history, and with him continues his outstanding influence on the path of renaissance, building, and development. History has made outstanding efforts in many areas, foremost among them the development of the UAE Armed Forces, which has been incorporated into a number of positions since his graduation in 1979 from the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, and his appointment as deputy commander-in-chief of the UAE Armed Forces in January 2005.

Local efforts and initiatives have accompanied his career since he was appointed crown prince of Abu Dhabi in November 2004, and have contributed to a qualitative leap in the emirate at all levels.
