Sudan intensifies the International and African communication on al-Nahda dam

The Sudanese government has called for intensifying contacts with various countries before the security session devoted to discussing the issue of the Al-Nahda dam.

On Monday evening, the Sudanese government issued a statement saying that the High Committee of Ennahda Dam, headed by Prime Minister Dr. Abdallah Hamdok, was briefed on the preparations for the Security Council session on the issue of Ennahda Dam, which is scheduled to be held next Thursday.

The meeting endorsed the position of the negotiating team and called for intensifying contacts with the countries concerned, particularly Tunisia, Kenya, Niger and France, which chairs the meetings of the Security Council this July.

The meeting discussed the results of the contacts made by the United Arab Emirates to bring together the views of the three parties, “Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia,” the statement said, praising the UAE’s efforts and expressing Sudan’s readiness to deal positively with these efforts.

He added that the meeting discussed the latest developments of the work on the construction of Al-Nahda Dam and the impact of this on the second filling, which has become a reality.

He stressed that the continuation of precautionary measures to reduce the negative effects of the second filling process while continuing diplomatic efforts to reach a binding legal agreement on the filling and operation of the Al-Nahda Dam.

Next Thursday, the UN Security Council will hold a special session on the issue of Al-Nahda dam at the request of the Arab countries, which Ethiopia rejects and insists on solving the problem in Africa.

The dispute is over the second filling of the Nahda dam, which Addis Abeba is building on the Blue Nile with the aim of generating 6 thousand megawatts of electricity.

Ethiopia intends to proceed with the second filling with the next rainy season, which Egypt and Sudan refuse.

The two countries are demanding a binding agreement on the dam’s operation before any unilateral action by Ethiopia, which is trying to ease the concerns of the two countries at the bottom.
