Sudan Sovereignty: Juba Agreement Holds Up, War Won’t Return to Darfur
A member of the Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, Al-Taher Abubakar Hajar, stressed the steadfastness of the Juba Peace Agreement for Sudan and the non-return to the square of war once again.
The comments of the Sovereign Council member followed renewed tribal clashes in South Darfur State that have claimed dozens of lives and raised fears of a return to violence for the region.
Addressing a crowd in the Abdel Kheir area of Karnawi district in North Darfur state, Al-Taher Abu Bakr Hajar said that Darfur has suffered from marginalization in the past and it is the duty of the state to achieve justice among all the Sudanese people.
He added that the parties to the peace process in Darfur agree on the issues of development, security, stability and peaceful coexistence in Darfur, noting that the positive discrimination of the war-affected areas aims to address the great damage they suffered during the war, and not to favor them over the rest of the regions.
He said that the glorious revolution of December crowned the legacy, struggle and accumulation of liberation revolutions throughout the history of Sudan and renewed the commitment of the parties of peace to implement the provisions of the Juba agreement despite the slow implementation of some clauses, saying that the issue of the return of refugees and displaced persons to their areas and villages is at the top of the priorities.
Earlier, Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemeti”, Vice President of the Sovereign Council of the Sudan, visited South Darfur and called for upholding national values and helping to establish security and stability in all Sudanese states.
Following a meeting with the South Darfur State Security Committee, al-Jumaili said police forces and judicial authorities must be activated to enable them to fulfill their role, the official Sudanese News Agency reported.
He stressed the need to enforce the law and resolve any violations without complacency, especially those that incite chaos. He noted that the emergency law will give the security agencies the right to take legal actions, under the supervision of the public prosecutor, against anyone carrying weapons outside the law, who threatens the security of citizens, and also uses them against the regular forces, directing them to deal with them in accordance with the law.
