Taliban inflames situation by restricting women’s freedoms – will the international community move?
After the Taliban banned university education for girls and women, there were many strong condemnations of the Taliban. But are there enough condemnations from the Arab and Islamic world to deter the Taliban from this decision?
Complexity of the scene
A report by Roaya Network revealed that the latest decisions violate basic human rights and contradict the teachings of Islam, and must be reversed quickly. The report considered that the Taliban’s decisions to ban girls from learning and their work in non-governmental organizations, which add a complication to the humanitarian scene in Afghanistan and threaten to stop the flow of aid to the country, and that the international community’s shock at the Taliban’s decisions can only be dispelled by reversing these decisions.
“The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said the Taliban’s decision was behind the lack of aid reaching those in need in Afghanistan, noting that its teams were no longer able to deliver support to those most in need.”
Violation of women’s rights
Political analyst Mukhtar Ghobashi says: The Taliban’s decisions against women stem from an emphasis that goes against all the rules of Islamic law, which honors women, violates international conventions and norms, and goes against humanity because it deprives a segment, which constitutes more than half of society, from participating in public life, and has a negative impact on development. It exposes the country and the people to further isolation from the international community, which is a new reality that Afghanistan does not need in light of the security threats and humanitarian needs it faces.
He added that the international community’s shock at the Taliban’s decisions can only be dispelled by revoking the violation of Afghan women’s rights, and by stopping depriving a large segment of society of education, which is necessary for raising children, male and female, and thus creating a generation aware of its country’s challenges. The future of any country is not straightforward without an educated, empowered woman aware of all that surrounds her family, society, country and the world.
Another blatant violation of women’s rights has been dealt a double blow to preventing the delivery of vital life-saving services and depriving many women of their livelihoods, he said.
