The Daily Mail reveals the reasons for the former England legend’s refusal to bid the Qatar World Cup: anti-human right state
The issue of human rights and the serious violations that are occurring in it, is certainly a crisis and a huge obstacle for Qatar, which has made every effort to win the World Cup as the first Arab country through bribes, pressure and other crimes, which have been the subject of wide debate since 2010. The crisis is now exacerbated by the deterioration of human rights and the government’s failure to fix the situation, and the trends of boycotting the World Cup have recently increased in a large global way.
In the latest images showing the trend towards boycotting the November 2022 World Cup, Gary Lineker refused to host the World Cup draw in Qatar because of concerns about the host country’s human rights record, leaving fellow BBC journalist Jermaine Jonas to take the party after saying it would be “hypocrisy” for him, according to the British Daily Mail.
The draw for this year’s championship, which begins at the end of November, was held in Doha last month. Former English midfielder Jermaine Jonas presented it along with former US international player Carly Lloyd and sports host Samantha Johnson, but according to the Daily Mail website, Linker first refused an invitation to host the event from FIFA president Gianni Infantino before contacting Jonas.
Gary Lineker, the legendary former England striker turned TV presenter, is considered the World Cup draw in the past, and received a violent response when he took center stage before the 2018 tournament in Russia. Therefore, he avoids similar criticism when he appeared in the Qatar World Cup. He believes that Lineker told Infantino that he could not accept the offer of Qatar’s lottery because it would be hypocritical to support the country that he disagreed with.
The Daily Mail pointed out that FIFA’s decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup proved highly controversial, especially with their poor human rights record, laws against LGBT people and the large number of migrant worker deaths raising questions about their suitability as hosts. However, it has provoked wide controversy and great surprise to the symbol of England David Beckham by signing a lucrative 10-year deal to become a cultural ambassador for the State of Qatar.
Lineker appeared to disagree, saying he would still be covering the BBC World Cup because reports of the event were not the same as his own. He criticized Beckham’s move in an interview with The Sun last November. He said: “This is not something I would have done, but it is his specialty.. I’m not a judicial person. How many people would refuse £150 million? The number would be very small. I’m not going to do that, and I mean it.. But he’s a businessman. He did a really good job. He was a nice guy, and he was very successful”.
