The Free Circulation of Weapons and the Infiltration of Terrorist Elements Have Aggravated Terrorism in Africa

In a recurring scene of violence on the African continent, the “Allied Democratic Forces” militias affiliated with the terrorist organizationISIS” through a faction called the “Central Africa Province,” launched a series of attacks on several villages in the “Beni” region in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism stated that the attacks resulted in the death of more than 37 people over the past three days, according to local media.

The civil society coordination in the “Beni” region in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo stated in a press release that elements of the “Allied Democratic Forces” militias attacked several villages in the Babila Bakayiko area in the “Beni” region in the North Kivu province over the course of three days.

The president of the local civil society coordination, Kinos Katouho, said that the death toll from the attacks by the militias affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS rose to at least 37, in addition to the burning of nine houses and seven motorcycles, adding that soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo deployed in the region began pursuing the armed elements who headed west to escape security pursuit, according to the Egyptian site “Youm7”.

From east to west, Benue State in Nigeria was attacked by armed men on Sunday, resulting in the death of 18 people and injuring dozens, according to local press sources. The president of the Katsina-Ala region, Justin Shaku, said that the attack was carried out by unknown individuals and that security forces sent additional troops to secure the area and pursue the perpetrators after the attack.

It is worth noting that the same state experienced another attack on July 16, which resulted in the death of 12 people in the Agatu area. Although no organization claimed responsibility for the attack, fingers point to the Boko Haram movement linked to the terrorist organization ISIS, which engages in kidnappings, killings, and threats against civilians.

Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism confirmed that one of the factors leading to the aggravation of terrorism in Africa is the lack of security coordination, resulting in security gaps, especially in border areas, which has contributed to the free circulation of weapons and the infiltration of terrorist elements from one country to another.

The Observatory stressed that the solution lies in forming security alliances through which attempts to make scenes of violence and terrorism a lived reality in the African continent can be countered, thus preventing the achievement of development and stability that the continent dreams of for current and future generations.
