According to a report in the British Daily Mail, groups of Black men are patrolling Lincoln Heights, one of the historic neighborhoods for African Americans in Cincinnati, wearing combat gear and carrying weapons, in response to the appearance of “white supremacists.”
Witnesses told the newspaper that “the racist extremists chanted racist slogans in the predominantly Black area, while the local police were accused of complacency and inaction, raising fears of violent confrontations.”

Background of the Crisis
The tensions trace back to February when around 12 white supremacists gathered on a bridge connecting Lincoln Heights—a predominantly Black neighborhood—to the white suburb of Evendale.
They raised a banner reading “America for the White Man.”
According to witnesses, the police did not intervene effectively, and they appeared to sympathize with the extremists, who quickly left without being arrested.
Weeks later, a member of the Ku Klux Klan was spotted handing out racist flyers, only to be stopped and fined $200, causing the Black community to lose trust in the authorities.

Reactions
The organizers of the security patrols argued that carrying arms is an exercise of a constitutional right, especially in a state that allows open carry without a permit, according to the newspaper.
Daronce Daniels, one of the organizers, said: “We are protecting our community from external threats, while the police fail to protect us.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton County authorities warned that arming civilians could lead to bloody confrontations, suggesting a ban on masks during the carrying of weapons.

Historical Context
Lincoln Heights has been a symbol of Black struggle since the 1920s as the first self-governed Black town north of the Mason-Dixon line. It was a key stop on the Underground Railroad, helping freed slaves build a new community.
However, the area has experienced a sharp economic decline, with its population shrinking from 6,000 to half over six decades, while neighboring white suburbs thrived, deepening racial and economic disparities.
