The Telegraph: Trump’s Ban on the Muslim Brotherhood Is a Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity

An article in the British newspaper The Telegraph highlights that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump could play a significant role in stabilizing the Middle East. The article argues that Trump’s immediate ban on the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates in America could force Europe to reconsider the financial and media networks used by the group.

Published under the title Trump Has a Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity to Extract the Poison from the Region”, the article by researcher Ed Husain emphasizes the urgent need to ban the Muslim Brotherhood, not Muslims in general, according to the author.

It is worth noting that during his first presidential term from 2016 to 2020, Trump sought to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

These efforts were hindered by what his supporters referred to as the deep state, a concept revealed by Republican Senator Ted Cruz. Cruz noted that the proposed decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization faced countless obstacles.

In a session hosted by the Hudson Institute in the United States, Ted Cruz stated:
“There are forces within the deep state in America preventing their designation. The Muslim Brotherhood, through their actions, methods, and operations, are a terrorist organization. They do not hide this; it is evident in their founding documents. Several of our allies, including Egypt, classify them as a terrorist organization because they have experienced it firsthand. The Muslim Brotherhood has killed far more Muslims than Jews or Christians.”

Cruz continued: “It is a terrorist organization willing to kill anyone who does not align with their jihadist worldview. We absolutely need to classify them as such. These same deep state forces within the State Department and Treasury are debating and saying, ‘Don’t do it, don’t classify the Brotherhood.’”

Several studies suggest that the Trump administration would prioritize counterterrorism, especially given its rise. This would include targeting transnational armed organizations like Al-Qaeda and ISIS, as well as local terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Pakistani Taliban. The Trump administration is also expected to use its military capabilities to curb threats posed by these organizations and to tighten the noose on various Islamist groups operating on U.S. soil.
